Governor Riley, Company Leaders Celebrate Reopening of Globe Specialty Metals in Selma

SELMA - Governor Bob Riley joined Globe Specialty Metals CEO Jeff Bradley and local officials on Friday to celebrate the reopening of the company's plant in Selma and the hiring of 90 employees.

Globe Specialty Metals is among the world's largest producers of silicon metal and silicon-based specialty alloys - critical ingredients in a host of industrial and consumer products.

The company had idled its Selma plant in April 2009. Governor Riley said today's reopening is a hopeful and positive sign that brighter economic times are ahead.

"The reopening of this plant is a vote of confidence in the future of Alabama's economy," said Governor Riley. "Its impact, however, goes far beyond new investment and jobs. Globe is bringing renewed opportunity and renewed hope to many families in this area. It breathes new life into the local economy. I applaud the leaders of Globe Specialty Metals for making this decision to reopen their Selma plant. What they're doing is providing a needed jumpstart for our economy."

"We are very pleased to be reopening our silicon metal and silicon alloy products plant in Selma. Demand for our products is increasing and the markets we serve are improving," said CEO Jeff Bradley. "This reopening represents our belief that the United States is still the best place to manufacture. It also represents our dedication to producing our products in Alabama, where we have come to expect a work ethic and commitment to excellence," Bradley said. "We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to Governor Riley whose sincerity and concern with job creation in Alabama has enabled, and is illustrated by, this facility's reopening."

Globe Specialty Metals is investing a significant amount of capital to restart the Selma facility. This plant will have the capacity to produce in excess of 27,000 tons of metallurgical grade silicon and silicon ferro-alloys annually. Its customers include major silicone chemical, aluminum and steel manufacturers producers of photovoltaic solar cells and computer chips, the auto industry, ductile iron foundries and concrete products.
